ABSTRACT

This book is a study of some ways in which Shakespeare exploits the possibilities of metaphor. Clearly, the terrain is too vast to permit of general or definitive coverage; and I present, therefore, a series of casehistories, from the early and mature Shakespeare. The play itself is in each case the sole area of investigation. My prime interest is in meta phor as a controlling structure, and my aim in each play is to detect the extent to which a certain metaphoric idea informs and organises the drama.
