ABSTRACT

At the beginning of the 1980s, the young intellectuals coming from the authoritarian regime and the transition period start with an upgrading process of the cultural background of the Portuguese far right in line with the experiences of innovation of the European neo-fascism – in particular with the French Nouvelle Droite (New Right – ND). The circulation of the ideas of the French new right is embodied by the journal Futuro Presente whose editorial line highlights also the reproduction in the Portuguese far right of the European divergences between the liberal-conservatives “new right” inspired by Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan and the anti-liberal “new right” inspired by Alain de Benoist. In this sense, the Portuguese far-right milieu proves to be more permeable to the former than to the latter.
