ABSTRACT

The conclusions of the book provide a general overview on the Portuguese far right highlighting the most important macro-features that characterize its diachronic evolution along the decades between late authoritarianism and democracy. Then it analyzes more in detail each historical period – the authoritarian regime of the New State, the transition to democracy, and the consolidated democracy until the present – in order to stress the endogenous and exogenous factors that explain the achievements and the failures of the Portuguese far right. Comparing those elements also with respect to the European extreme right, the chapter presents some observations about the current status of the Portuguese far right and its possible evolution for the future in the context of the Western right-wing populist wave.
