ABSTRACT

Anyone who has been involved in a police-suspect physical encounter will tell you that there is a very high probability that, eventually, the fight will fall to the ground. Understanding some key principles can make a difference in such a fight. There are, of course, more restrictions and fewer options available to you because of the nature of being on the ground, but this does not mean that you are limited to only a few defensive techniques. As in any fight, when you are standing or are on the ground, the most important thing is to keep your head about you and to note your options and openings as quickly as you can.
