ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the recommendations according to the different categories that were identified by analysis and examination and that reflect issues of significance and importance that became evident during the research. They are as follows: research, acquisition of data and analysis; working practices; training; welfare; personal initiatives of officers and staff; and the initiatives of family and friends. Following the recommendations, two tables are presented. The first refers to the potential costs of adopting the recommendations and the second to the effort that would be required of those embracing the lower-cost recommendations. Each UK force should record the statistical data relating to serving officers/staff who have engaged in a parasuicidal incident which was considered to be life-threatening at the time of the incident. Analysis of the data should be undertaken to identify the underlying causes of the suicides and parasuicidal incidents. This analysis would include determining: emerging patterns of suicidal ideation; and the potential impact of the 'Werther effect'.
