ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses one area in which it should be possible for a grammar school to enter positively into the life of its neighbourhood. It is a long-established tradition that a well-conducted school will provide out of school activities in which the pupils can spend at least part of their leisure time. Some schools have adopted the practice of starting clubs and societies inside normal school time while expecting them to continue in the pupils' own time afterwards. A school should offer many different kinds of physical activities and should encourage its senior pupils to find at least one among them which gives pleasure and satisfaction. Experience of success and the ability to excel in something are extremely important for the adolescent, and are most easily achieved by many of them in the physical sphere. To provide opportunities for self expression is an obvious aim of some of the societies which a school will provide.
