ABSTRACT

The chapter examines the historical development of the Danish apprenticeship system in the period from the dissolution of the guilds until 1945. First, it traces the roots of the modern VET system in the medieval apprenticeship system. Next, it is examines how new collective forms of regulation were formed to maintain the quality of vocational training in collaboration between the labour market organisations and the state. The chapter examines how the demand for school-based training was managed, and how the emerging vocational schools connected to apprenticeships. Finally, it examines the institutionalisation of the system of occupational self-governance by the labour market organisations.
