ABSTRACT

Correction officers are charged with seeing to it that inmates “do things”: that they are ready to leave galleries on time, that they return to their cells on time, that they arrive and leave recreation areas on time. With 1,600 inmates in the institution and each inmate expecting that he will be able to use the limited facilities when he is scheduled to use them, delays in one area cause problems all along the line. This is especially important in an institution like Auburn, where programs for inmates are heavily stressed.
