ABSTRACT

This book is based on the results of an experience survey conducted with a sample of correction officers drawn from one maximum security institution, New York State’s Auburn Correctional Facility (see Appendix E for a discussion of sampling procedures). To the extent that the “unique” characteristics of an indi vidual maximum security institution (the number of inmate programs available, the management approach of the superintendent, the age, racial composition and turnover in the inmate populations, etc.) provide a “unique” context within which correction officers work, it presents findings that do not apply elsewhere. However, if the general perspective and methods employed are judged successful in enhancing our understanding of prison guards and the place of the guard in the prison community, the “work perspective” employed here may have more general applicability.
