This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of the book. The book focuses on the process of parental separation and divorce from a number of different perspectives and considers how children can be helped at each stage in the process. The aim of the book is to help teachers become more aware of how parental separation and divorce affect children, what schools can do to support pupils, and when they need to seek help from other agencies. It would be preferable if marital relationships could be helped to improve and grow rather than fall apart when children are involved. Demoralization caused by negative feelings about the divorce causes parents to be less responsive to their children. The unhappiness of children and the bewilderment of parents, teachers, and other adult caregivers when they become involved with the consequences of divorce are apparent.
