ABSTRACT

I was having an impassioned discussion with a friend in which he was despairingly musing on the current, atrophying state of mental health in the US. “We’re losing it,” he moaned. “What are you talking about?” I said, forever the optimist. His answer was grim. “Rates of anxiety and depression are skyrocketing,” he pointed out. “Mental illness is on the rise. Say what you will about the efficacy of treatment, we’re only getting worse.”
