ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a general survey and analysis of the situation that faces this country at the present time and examines as closely the varied possibilities of response. It focuses on the characteristic quality of the community we live in. The chapter also examines the nature of the values that we ourselves as individuals cherish most deeply. It explores the most important educational values or objectives. In public affairs the habit of restraint is a major element in the tradition of compromise, for which a high degree of moderation and reasonableness is a necessary condition. One is a desire to feel one is making a useful contribution to the community. Skilled craftsmen, according to the Anglo-American Productivity Council reports, show intense pride in their work. Many people gain a corresponding satisfaction outside their jobs by helping to run voluntary organizations and public affairs.
