ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a guide to materials for signposting parents to local and national services. It focuses on new parents, especially new mothers. Many of the parents that will be dropping off their children to the baby room are likely to be sleep deprived. Mothers are entitled to breastfeed in their place of work and express milk to leave in a nursery for one to give to the baby. The attachment relationship between a caregiver and infant is the way that infants instinctively ensure their survival through ensuring the strong bond between caregiver and infant. From the perspective of the parent, taking a child to nursery and entrusting them to relative strangers is an extreme act of faith. Many practitioners will understand that separating from their child can be painful for parents. Children are often distractible by playful activities when a parent leaves.
