ABSTRACT

Education has been in a tail spin for last few years where parent opt-out-of-testing movements have pummeled the terrain of educational policy making regarding how high-stakes assessments would be tied to teacher evaluation, remediation decisions for children, and so much more. Bluntly put, people are tired of the number of assessments students are taking nowadays and although the ESSA Act was meant to replace NCLB in a good way, it is still condoning many of the wrong-headed policies that are directly related to student assessments. This chapter is for educators everywhere who want to see the ideals of authentic assessment and portfolio designs enter back into the field as being the most desirable and most significant tools to gauge student growth and progress. At Lansburg High School, not many teachers give pop quizzes. However, Mr. Lehman, uses pop quizzes, and student grades are posted 20" to 30" lower than in any other science section within the tenth or eleventh grade.
