ABSTRACT

Few studies to date have explored language teachers’ views on professional development (PD) in Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) and examined the effect of such PD on teaching practices. In Vietnam, the integration of technology into education has always been a key issue in language teaching reforms. A number of large-scale PD courses have been introduced in Vietnam as part of Project 2020. This chapter examines the views of Vietnamese university teachers of English on a large-scale national CALL course, which is part of the government’s initiative to develop teachers’ skills and knowledge in relation to the use of technology in teaching. Based on interviews with 20 teachers on the course content and delivery and its effect on their teaching practices, this chapter demonstrates the important role of the course in introducing modern technologies to language education in Vietnam. At the same time, however, it finds that the course failed to acknowledge the wide variety of teaching settings and individual teachers’ needs because of the pre-packaged and standardised nature of its content. The chapter concludes with suggestions for successful PD courses in CALL in the future.
