ABSTRACT

Qatar is an independent state which projects 100 miles north into the Gulf off Saudi Arabia. The peninsula attains a width of 40 miles and shares a common eastern border with the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Most of the estimated population of 210,000 live in the capital of Doha, on the east coast. Qatar’s Emir and Head of State is H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad al-Thani, who deposed his cousin in 1972, pledging the birth of a ‘. . .new era. . .of enlightened rule, social justice and stability’.
