ABSTRACT

This chapter illustrates the perceptions of lower-achieving boys who were members of the groups referred to as the Bored and Banal and the Low Riders. The Bored and Banal were a male-dominated group named in light of their significantly low scores for computers and the Internet, books and reading and the social aspects of reading. The Bored and Banal scored the lowest of all participants in terms of enjoyment for computers and the Internet. There were indications from the participants that for some boys playing computer games was considered 'nerdy' and 'boring'. The cluster solution indicated that the Bored and Banal responded in the least positive manner in the survey in terms of their enjoyment of reading. The Bored and Banal once again scored the lowest of all participants for enjoyment of the social aspects of reading. The cluster solution suggested that the students in this group responded to the survey in significantly different ways.
