ABSTRACT

This chapter provides experiential exercises to deepen understanding of ethical and legal issues related to teaching and being a gatekeeper for the profession. It will include: case studies of ethical and legal issues and managing resistance to feedback concerning ethical and legal behaviour. Knowledge of counseling professional ethics and federal laws is mandatory for successful teaching. There will be ample opportunities to help students reflect on their behavior when it is focused on ethical and legal concerns. Students often flounder when their behavior borders on what is unethical more than what is illegal because of the nuanced character of ethics. The chapter presents the case examples with guiding questions to help counselor educators consider how to manage resistance to feedback concerning ethical issues.
