ABSTRACT

This chapter provides supplemental materials to assist building insight and promoting skill development in formative and summative assessment including how to build assessment instruments and deliver feedback. It includes example formative and summative assessments; sample syllabus and questions to develop appropriate assessments and samples of feedback. Learning how to assess students' counseling skills, knowledge, and professional development is a skill new counselor educators must develop. There are a variety of ways to do so within each course and across the counseling program. The connection between the various modalities is one of learning collaboration and consultation. Quality feedback is essential to positive learning experiences for both students and educators. Quality feedback can bolster student learning by supporting their strengths, keeping their work goal-directed, and clarify errors. Students are evaluated on their understanding of the construct and their ability to present it succinctly and accurately.
