ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses and elaborates on the notion of risk in the context of vocational and career psychology. To comprehend the risk phenomenon in the context of individuals' worklife and career development, it first presents a rationale of recognizing vocational risks. The chapter then examines some main sources of vocational risks. Finally, it focuses on how the notion of risk is delineated and perceived in vocational psychology. Combined, these three aspects attempt to provide some conceptual foundation for negotiating and managing risks in people's life-career journey. The natural and environmental sources of risks are very often intertwined with other social and societal risks in the macro-sociological-ecology (MSE) system. Rather than feeling vulnerable or even fearful about the possible risks, a person with more psychological stamina is able to focus on how to deal with the risk reality. A key aspect in becoming more effective in coping with the risk reality lies with a person's capacity in risk management.
