ABSTRACT

The Chiapas Photography Project , or CPP, was established by Carlota Duarte, an American nun of the Society of the Sacred Heart in 1992 in San Cristobal de Las Casas, a city in the highlands of Chiapas Mexico. 1 Duarte saw photography as a tool to allow indigenous people of Mexico to speak for themselves in a historical context in which their voices had been suppressed and marginalised (Duarte 2009). The project began with small photography workshops with women supporting engagement with education.
