ABSTRACT

Higher cognitive processes require the continuous input of information. If that information is to be obtained visually, eye movements are needed. Although eye movements are relatively quick, an ongoing cognitive process still experiences a noticeable lag between the request for new information and its actual arrival. The purpose of this chapter is to analyze the impact on cognitive processes of the lag in information delivery by an eye movement. In all that follows, eye movement refers exclusively to the voluntary saccadic eye movements that are initiated by cognitive processes. The class of involuntary eye movements is not considered.
