ABSTRACT
Quaker Street Infant School, Spitalfields, opened on 23 July 1820,I but according to Wilderspin's account it was not until 7 August that he and his wife were asked "to take the management of the concern". 2 It was later asserted by critics of Wilderspin that he had served the first fortnight as assistant to a female teacher. 3 He denied this, and it is possible that he had been approached by Wilson to succeed a previous teacher after the school had opened.
