ABSTRACT

When Wilderspin returned from Ireland in the late summer ofl839, he took up residence in Warrington in the belief that his services might be of more use in a densely-populated manufacturing district than in any other part of the country. 1 The proximity of Warrington to Liverpool, the port of disembarkation from Ireland and territory familiar to him, might also have been a consideration. From September onwards he attempted to resume his career as a lecturer and organiser of infant schools that he had broken off three years earlier.
