ABSTRACT

This introductory chapter offers an overview of the themes discussed in this volume about art and design teaching and learning in higher education. The chapter explains that in Part 1 of the volume the authors analyse creative studio pedagogy by locating it within a theoretical framework of knowledge, values and ambiguity. The summaries of the remaining chapters in Part 2 of the volume show how our analysis can be applied to curriculum, project centred learning and assessment. This chapter introduces the reader to our concept of the ‘sticky curriculum’ in art and design which runs throughout this volume.
