ABSTRACT

In this chapter we explore value and values from two interconnected standpoints: firstly, the contested and contextualised values that underpin art and design education and secondly the ways that value is assigned or denied to students and their work. Values, whether revealed or veiled, have a direct impact on the way that we design, understand and experience art and design pedagogy, curriculum and assessment. By exposing the values that underpin art and design education, we advocate a more critical and nuanced approach to equality and inclusion in the curriculum.
