ABSTRACT

This section addresses updates on litigation, domestic and international law, and noteworthy events concerning cultural property in the marine environment. There have been important developments in two shipwreck cases that were covered in Yearbook 2009, the Black Swan/Mercedes and the Griffin. Also, a long-standing controversy over artifacts recovered from the Titanic is nearing a decision, and the wreck of the HMS Victory, an eighteenth century British battleship, was discovered. Lastly, an update on the newly effective UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage is included.
