ABSTRACT

Digital media are a natural for archaeologists, who have long wanted to move away from linear story lines. Digital writing is collaborative writing, the art of engaging with others and keeping conversations going. It uses diverse sources from the Web to round out pieces of the story. Digital writing provides technical definitions and more specialized material by hyperlink. It makes as much use of audio and visual materials as possible. Digital books bristle with formidable problems like storage, which is why the Mellon Foundation has funded the Archaeology of the Americas Digital Monograph Initiative run by a half-dozen university presses. Digital journalists anxious to create a significant readership spend many hours developing contacts and networking with all manner of people. Social networking is all the fashion these days. In part blogs are a form of social networking, but they are far more for many people.
