ABSTRACT
Demands to allow Palestinian refugees to return to locations within Israel from which Palestinians were uprooted in 1948 are framed, on both the Israeli and the Palestinian sides, as a zero sum debate that many on both sides believe might have crucial implications on collective survival. It invokes a host of practical issues as well as less tangible, but not less salient, questions of identity, representation, and the very meaning of the social.
