In this article Du Bois explains his early interest in African history and culture, and some of the people and works that influenced his understanding of Africa. He goes on to describe his involvement in the various Pan-African congresses held during the first half of the twentieth century, his attempts to develop an “African” encyclopedia, and the need for Africa to be written about from an African point of view.
