ABSTRACT

Madison Avenue in New York City was, at one time, the street where many important advertising agencies were located. It now serves, in the public mind, as a signifier for the entire advertising industry an industry that has played an important role in the development of the American economy and in the creation of an American cultural identity. Americans are subject to an enormous amount of advertising and, because it is a glamour industry and a controversial one. There have been any number of films and television shows that have had advertising executives in them and deal with advertising, but it is a recent television series, 'Mad Men', an award-winning show, that has made an interest in Madison Avenue and the advertising industry a topic of everyday conversation. Moral dilemma involves advertising manipulating people, or 'seducing' people, and thus using them as means toward a particular end higher sales figures and higher profits for the companies that employ the advertising agencies.
