ABSTRACT

The fact that it calls itself 'Mall of America' suggests its sense of its importance in American society and consumer culture. Semiotically speaking, its name suggests its national significancea mall for all Americans, and anyone else who would like to shop there. And the statistics about the number of people, who visit it, and the fact that many of them are tourists, mean that it is an important American tourist attraction and an icon with significant cultural resonance. The Mall of America puts shopping first, but also adds a theme park, Nickelodeon Universe, and continual entertainment. The Mall of America has 350 events a year, which means just about every day some kind of an entertainment event is going on. In Disneyland, the desire for entertainment lures people to visit the theme park, where they also have the opportunity to do some shopping.
