ABSTRACT

Why is seeing Antarctica and landing on the Antarctic continent so important to people? The passion shown by many of the passengers on a cruise I took to Antarctica made me wonder whether there might be an unrecognized sacred or hidden religious dimension to the voyage. Could it be that many of the passengers, without fully recognizing what they were doing, were on some kind of a religious pilgrimage and that Antarctica’s incredible natural beauty was similar, in nature, to the sacred destinations of many religious pilgrims?
