ABSTRACT
Conservators handle objects (often fascinating, and sometimes extraordinary, objects) all the time, and it is easy to forget that this contact with objects and discovery of the stories they tell is not available to others. The aim of this chapter is to explore the role of touch and handling in the examination, conservation, and restoration of objects, and to consider the ambiguities inherent in conservators’ involvement with touch.
