ABSTRACT

There are several causes for under-achievement. I have already discussed other causes, such as time management, learning disabilities, and personal crisis. There are at least four more reasons: discouragement, under preparedness, lack of motivation and acute reaction. Little can be done for the student with low motivation to succeed. These students are in school at the wrong time in their lives. They would rather be doing something else. When I discover such students I encourage them to do something else for a while. We talk about taking a leave of absence and what the student could do during that time that might be more interesting. You need to know your school’s policies on such leaves and when the readmission policies take effect. I also explain about transfer credit for work already completed and adult degree completion programs. I identify as many of the local programs as I can for the student to consider when they are older. I send them to the career center for help with transitioning to a job. I tell them to stay in touch with me and contact me when they are ready to come back to school.
