ABSTRACT

Just as the students take the presentation apart to score it, your evaluation of the presentation should follow the same pattern. Presenters should not have to worry that they must do one thing to satisfy their student audience and another to satisfy you. The difference between your score and the scores of their classmates is that you are providing formative as well as summative evaluation. That is, you are taking research process, source quality, and the degree of difficulty of the chosen topic into account, while the classmates score the formal aspects of the argument. You should be explicit about these differences; provide both the student rubric and your own in the syllabus or assignment sheet. It is also important for you to make your judgments and write comments as soon after the presentation as possible. Much of the subtlety of your experience with the presentation will be lost the longer you wait.
