ABSTRACT

The selection of materials is your way of making the knowledge base of the course a subset of your discipline. It is the most intellectually demanding aspect of course design and requires you to have knowledge of the available books, articles, and media in excess of what you will actually use. It is also the aspect of course design that you must undertake continuously, not just the week that book orders are due. By continuously, I mean that it is something you should be thinking about whenever you encounter a useful text, idea, approach, or data set that might apply to the course, whether you are teaching it at the time or not.
