ABSTRACT

Never show a film or performance that takes up more than 60 percent of class time. Students need to follow up after the viewing. This is where the collaborative learning takes place. If you want to show a longer film, show it in sections. Even though the film is not finished, students should break out into informal groups to work through the issues that have been presented so far. The groups should remain together until they have seen all the sections of the film. While the groups can busy themselves with working out the concrete details of the film, encourage them to treat the film as a case with implications for interpretation or action in other contexts. Have them play out scenarios that would have resulted in different outcomes. As with all such informal group activity, the various groups should share their reflections with the class.
