ABSTRACT

Writing the definition section calls upon and reinforces much higher levels of reasoning skills. Putting the solution section immediately after the definition instead of a results section or discussion section also increases the value of the writing for the reader. In practice, this section combines the materials and methods section and results section of IMRaD but tailors the materials and methods section to the reader, rather than detailing the chronological actions of the writer in the research. This shift in focus is a crucial component of the solution section. Instead of a discussion or conclusion, the benefits section restates and reinforces the value of the research for the reader in the most direct way possible. A good benefits section must convince readers that they have not wasted their time reading the report because their own understanding or practice can be enhanced as a result of the research. There is no room in this section for speculation. Instead, the writer must show a familiarity with the reader’s position and write the benefits of the research with that position in mind.
