ABSTRACT

There are issues associated with using surveys of this kind. The first issue is one of representation. The students who fill out such a survey are the ones who are present on the day the instructor decides to administer the survey. If the entire class, rather than just this subset, were polled, the results might vary significantly. Some colleges have experimented with putting the survey online and requiring the students to fill it out before they can see the grade they received in the course. Forcing students to provide opinions strikes some observers as introducing a new bias into the result.
