ABSTRACT

Lecturing need not be confined to large classes, although large classes pose special opportunities for lecturers. Lectures are also effective in small classes and serve as a change of pace for discussion-based and even problem-based classrooms. The trick to effective lecturing in all classes is to have students thinking as you are talking, rather than merely writing down what you say. This is known as active lecturing. Providing them with as much of the material you will speak about ahead of time goes a long way toward freeing up time for thinking.
