ABSTRACT
The instructor’s anecdotes, disciplinary lore, mnemonic devices, debates in the field, and similar oral traditions surrounding the information give students additional handles with which to cross-reference their memories of the material. The instructor’s use of tangents may actually help students remember the material, as indeed it helped the instructor remember the material.
