ABSTRACT
This and the next three chapters focus on basic orienteering skills using graphical presentations and exercises, beginning here with compass features and use. The compass is used in all phases of archaeological survey, and few tools are as important and basic, with key roles in plotting location, aligning transect coverage, recording survey observations, and making site sketch maps.
