ABSTRACT
Although membership to professional organizations is not mandatory, we highly recommend it. An anthropological organization is its membership. Generally, within major national organizations, everyone except the executive director and the office staff is a volunteer. Smaller state and local organizations are managed entirely by volunteers. It is the membership (professional anthropologists) that gives guidance and direction not only to the organization, but to the decisions and directions of the profession.
