ABSTRACT

The absence of a limb is manifest to the person who has experienced loss, but, depending on dress style and site in his or her social environment, intimates and strangers. Strangers do not have the luxury of premeditation. Transplants involve but contrast with other amputations, because superficially, the corporeal changes of transplantation are indiscernible. Fantasies of organ transplants to extend life, like imagined external grafts to restore function and appearance that anticipated recent developments in reconstructive surgery, reattachment and transplantation, are centuries old. Human kidney transplant is the longest established and most prevalent organ transplant surgery. Kidneys fail for multiple reasons. The most common causes of failure are hypertension, diabetes nephropathy and glomerulonephritis, but kidney failure occurs also due to infection, congenital diseases such as polycystic kidney disease, physiological anomalies, and connective tissue diseases. The alternative to hemodialysis is peritoneal dialysis, either Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) or Automated Peritoneal Dialysis (APD).
