Word of the catastrophe spread quickly through the project community. Everyone understood Alice’s loss would mean the certain end of the Aynalı Tepe Project: permits would be withdrawn, foreign archaeologists expelled from the country if not thrown in jail, Jones’s reputation would be in ruins, Satchi would probably have to get a real job, and the students would have no future. Aynalı Tepe would be toxic to everyone involved. Thus it was important that the loss be kept confidential and Alice recovered if at all possible.
