ABSTRACT

Adoption touches the lives of nearly two-thirds of the American population, yet museums seem to lack representation of this issue in exhibits and programs. There are limited and promising examples, such as museums that hold daylong events in support of adoption, while others represent adoption through other exhibit themes, but few examples specifically focus on the issues surrounding adoption. As safe spaces that encourage dialogue, museums have a significant and untapped opportunity to bring this topic into our national dialog about family and identity.
