ABSTRACT

Our society is at war against prejudices towards different genders, races, ages, ethnicities, religions, and beliefs. Weight bias, on the other hand, is still a socially acceptable form of discrimination. Museums can take a more active role in addressing negative body image and weight stereotypes in their communities. A better understanding of body image, positive reinforcement of individual body differences, and inspiration to lead more active lifestyles can foster the long-term health and mental well-being of communities. Museums can encourage positive self-worth and inspire visitors to lead a healthier life, one choice at a time.
