ABSTRACT
THE awakening of Arab consciousness in modern times and the consequent rise of Arab nationalism can be attributed, inter alia, to the activities of the Zionists and to the impact of the First World War. The Palestinians were part of the Arab World, sharing with it many internal developments as well as some of its external influences. Zionism was particularly influential in shaping their politics and in determining their political destiny.
