ABSTRACT

The mammalian remains from Baynard's Castle were to be included in the collection of archaeo zoological material held by the British Museum (Natural History), each specimen was assigned a registration number, and a detailed list of the collection was compiled. Measurements were taken, from specimens that could be readily identified to both species and part of skeleton, using dial calipers following those described in the work by Driesch. To handle the large amount of data collected from the skeletal remains of cattle, sheep and pig required the use of the Varian computer at the BM(NH). Data fed into the BM(NH) computer were temporarily held in store by being assigned either to one of the available magnetic discs or to magnetic tape. The recent acquisition by the Central Services Department of the BM(NH) of the components for building an electronic digital measuring device will undoubtedly revolutionise the collection and processing of osteometric data at the museum.
